these always make me believe in magic
Starring Sandra Bullock, Nicole Kidman and Stockard Channing the film is the story of two sisters, Sally and Gillian Owens. They halways knew they were different. Raised by their aunts after their parents' death, the sisters grew up in a household that was anything but typical--their aunts fed them chocolate cake for breakfast and taught them the uses of practical magic. But the invocation of the Owens' sorcery also carries a price--some call it a curse: the men they fall in love with are doomed to an untimely death. Now adult women with very different personalities, the quiet Sally and the fiery Gillian must use all of their powers to fight the family curse and a swarm of supernatural forces that threatens the lives of all the Owens women.
I found this film funny and it definitely deserves its rating as a feel good romantic comedy. Stockard Channing is as always marvellous. I must admit that I enjoyed the film so much that I went and read the book. Definitely better in many ways than the movie, you really will enjoy both if you are into magic.
This film stars Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy. More than 300 years ago, 3 witches were sentenced to die in Salem, Massachusetts and a boy was turned into a cat (a black cat, naturally). Now it's Halloween, and the witches (who fly on [I kid you not] vacuum cleaners) are back. This time, they've got their eyes on immortal life and have turned their wrath on trick-or-treaters and it's up to the 300-year-old cat to save the day.
How can you not love a film with Bette Midler in it? She is really funny in this as an evil witch. Definitely worth watching when you need a bit of a lift.
This film has a stellar cast with Jack Nicholson, Cher, Susan Sarandon and Michelle Pfeiffer. the story centres around three single women in a picturesque village who have their wishes granted - at a cost - when a mysterious and flamboyant man arrives in their lives.
Utterly over the top, Cher and Michelle Pfeiffer are especially funny, and Jack Nicholson is always an excellent evil character.
Another feel good movie with Nicole Kidman this film also stars Shirley MacLaine. Thinking he can overshadow an unknown actress in the part, an egocentric actor played by Will Ferrell unknowingly gets a witch cast in an upcoming television remake of the classic show "Bewitched". Filled with lots of great comedy moments, this will definitely get you laughing. The singing is a bit cringe worthy, but all part of the fun.
Nicole Kidman is so cute in this. You will enjoy the film even if you aren't a big fan of her work. Especially with Shirley MacLaine being the amazing cameo performer that she is.
This is slightly darker, and more in the nature of a teenager drama. A newcomer to a Catholic prep high school falls in with a trio of outcast teenage girls who practice witchcraft and they all soon conjure up various spells and curses against those who even slightly anger them. This is definitely a warning to young witches and Wiccans about the evils that can befall those who do not heed the Wiccan Rede.

Pat writes: I haven't seen any of these films, but Practial Magic sounds good. The males of my household like Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman, so this sounds like a good bet for the holidays.
